How horses learn

I got a new horse in training that is prone to run people (objects and fences) down and kick. Although I had to stand my ground quite firmly at one point I think the horse made a huge progress in a short amount of time. Thanks to the flag I guess, cause she hadn't seen one of those before - whips and ropes on the other hand is something she has learned to barge through.


As always horses learn from the release of pressure - not the pressure itself. Spending time standing with horses and resting them after they have done the right thing or when they are doing the right thing (which in this case is to respect my personal space) is a very important part of the learning process.


My main focus with this horse, to start with, is to be able to turn the hind end over and not be in my personal space. Watch video of the first session here:
