How to claim personal space without offending the horse

Personal space is extremely important when being with horses. In fact if a horse doesn`t respect our personal space, any interaction becomes very dangerous.
When that`s said, personal space is not about having a horse at 2 meters distance at all times. Horses can be in our space, just as we can be in theirs - This is not a problem, as long as we can get the horse out of our space in a way they understand, without offending them. When I say offended, I mean backing away with high, stiff neck, hollow back kind of posture - that's not the reaction I want when asking for personal space.
